Senator Kurita opposes alcohol sales in
state parks
Legislation pending in the General Assembly would permit the sale of
wine and beer in Tennessee state parks. Senator Rosalind Kurita voted
against the measure in the State and Local Government Committee calling the
measure bad public policy.
"Our state parks should be healthy, wholesome and safe places for
our children and families to enjoy nature and outdoor activities," Senator
Kurita said. "I don't think alcohol will enhance the family environment
that we expect at our state parks. In fact, it could have a negative effect
on the atmosphere that we expect in our parks."
Senator Kurita said that serving alcohol in state parks does not
coincide with the mission of taxpayer funded state recreation facilities.
"The unique values of state parks would be compromised by the sale of
alcoholic beverage. State parks are among the few places that families can
go for wholesome fun."
The legislation passed the State and Local Government Committee in
spite of Sen. Kurita's opposition. It has been referred to the Senate
Finance Committee for further review. -#- -
